The year 2012 began with a lot of doomsday hysteria about the predicted end of the world according to the Mayan calendar. As we reach the end of the year, we’ve heard much more from academics and Mayan scholars who have convinced even the darkest pessimists, that while December 2012 marks the end of the Mayan calendar, there is no pending end to our world.
In addition to the historic significance of the Mayan Calendar, 12.12.12 is a fascinating number to many. Especially to numerologists, who point to the universal importance of the repeating pattern of this number in our culture. The number 12 can be evenly divided into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths. No other small number can be evenly divided.
The number 12 is also a unique, interesting and very “useful” number, in terms of its use in time and logistics. The Egyptians came up with the first 12-month calendar, and the Romans later modified it, but stayed with the 12-month system we still have today. The day and night are divided into two 12-hour periods. There are 12 signs of the Zodiac (which are also used by scientist and astronomers, not just mystics!) And there are plenty more uses of 12 – from 12 in a dozen to the 12 apostles and 12 days of Christmas, etc.
Regardless of what the many different predictions say about 12.12.12, one thing is sure; it’s the last time we will ever have three repeating dates for day, month, and year in our lifetime.
