The act of smudging pulls us into the present moment, forces us to slow down and be intentional about the time and space around us. Like Sage, Sweetgrass or Cedar, Palo Santo is most widely used for spiritual purification and energy (house) cleansing. What is unique about Palo Santo is that it both purifies negative energy, and attracts positive energy. Once the wood sticks are burned, the smoke clears negative energy and restore tranquility and calm emotions. Palo Santo is a sacred wood is also known to inspire creativity, bring a deeper connection to the divine source, and aid in physical healing.
To Smudge With Palo Santo Matchsticks:
Hold a piece of wood slightly upside down and light the tip until there is a small flame. After 1 minute, blow it out so only smoke is produced. Move or walk around the space, and as you do so, focus on gratitude for whatever is in front of you (your office where you work, your meditation space where you practice peace, your kitchen where food is abundant, etc.)
Place the stick on an angle embers-down in a fireproof bowl in a way that will allow it to continue burning and gently blow on the embers when needed. This is called smudging. It may need to be re-lit several times so it will continue to release its essential oils and energetic properties. Some prefer to keep small rocks in a fireproof bowl and the put the embers into the rock bed in order to put it out when finished. The stick can be reused several times until it is all gone. The aroma is similar to tree resin.
