Moon Water Ritual
Many spiritual traditions throughout history have given special importance to the moon, believing its various cycles affect our moods and physical well-being, and rituals for harnessing the moon’s energy have existed for centuries. One potent way to harness this energy is to collect moon water. Moon water is water charged with lunar energy, which can be used to cleanse negative emotions or used in ritual to promote cleansing, renewal, and intention-setting.
Why Work With Moon Water?
Lunar symbolism is present in nearly every religious tradition across the globe, and is especially prominent in astrology. Spiritually, the moon is a hugely influential entity that guides us energetically. Moon water is a way of really bringing that energy into ourselves and carrying it with us, and a moon water ritual can help us to feel in “flow” with the universe. The exact origins of moon water are unclear, but the practice of making moon water has origins in paganism and has been around since at least the 1800s. In Ayurveda (which originated in India over 5,000 years ago and is considered one of the world’s first healing sciences) people bathe in moon water in order to fully absorb the prana or energy of the moon.
As the name suggests, moon water is simply water that has had time to sit under the light of the moon and soak up some of its power. You can create Moon water by leaving water with specific intent outdoors to charge under the moonlight. Because the Moon affects the ocean’s tides, there’s already an energetic connection between the element of water and the Moon. Water is a programmable element, which means it takes on the energetic properties of things around it quite easily. The human body, and the earth, are both made up of around 65-70% water, and there's no shortage of research on how the moon affects both the movement of water and our moods.
The Magic Of The Moon
Moon water can be used for intention setting, rituals, healing, cleansing, manifestation, and much more. If you want to amplify your next ritual, moon water is a great addition. It can be made during any moon phase, however, moon water collected during a Full Moon, Super Moon, or New Moon where the energy is heightened, is most effective.
The Moon rules over the subtle, subconscious, and intuitive aspects of the self, and its wax and wane reflect our own. When we align ourselves with the Moon, we’re tapping into an ancient energy current.
How To Make Moon Water
-
Find a clear glass bottle or jar and cleanse it before use. Any type of cleansing sage would work fine for this. Settle in a get quiet. Meditate, or light a candle to start feeling into what your intentions are for harnessing energy.
-
If possible, source your water from a fresh, natural source. If you live by a nearby stream or river, gently dip your container in the water source and fill it with fresh water. If you don’t live near fresh water, tap water or bottled water will also work. If you are planning on making consumable moon water, I recommend using tap, filtered, or bottled water.
- After filling your jar with water, place it under the moon. Cover the jar and leave overnight. You can leave it by a window or leave it outside overnight.
- Make sure to set an your intention into the water - speak your intention for your water out loud, then write down your intention for your water and place it under the jar. This is where the magick happens.
-
You can enhance your moon water by adding in an earth element like clear quartz. Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine, and Rose Quartz are all great for this process. (However, we don't recommend drinking your moon water if you've added crystals.)
-
You can drink—or bathe in, or spritz your home with—moon water to harness its energy. Full moons are the best time to cultivate your power and expedite the manifestation of goals, and incorporating moon water into your routine can extend those positive vibes.
There are so many fun ways you can utilize your moon water. You can make a psychic tea before doing a reading or performing divination use, water your plants, use it in specific rituals, bless your stones, add it to any sprays to help cleanse your home, and add it to a ritual bath. Moon water has endless possibilities when using it. The most important thing to remember is that you made it with YOUR intent. So have fun, and get creative with its’ uses.
