Written at least 2,000 years before the Ten Commandments of Moses, the 42 Commandments of Ancient Egypt, the " Ideals of Ma’at," were one of Africa’s - and the world’s - oldest sources of moral and spiritual instruction. In fact, 8 of the 10 Commandments originate from the Ideals of Ma'at. And although they were somewhat buried in 2000 years of history, and the splitting of religions, The 42 Ideals of Ma'at are so simple, and so beautiful - they cover every basic tenant of higher awareness and consciousness - they are as relevant today as if they came straight from a modern day spiritual teacher.
For the Ancient Egyptians, the 42 Ideals of Ma’at represented balance and order. Ma'at is the goddess of fairness, integrity, promises, truth, and justice. She wears the feather of truth on her headdress, which she used with a scale of justice to weigh the heaviness of guilt or deceit within a newly deceased soul's heart. She also carries an Ankh, the key of life, and sometimes a scepter.
Maat is the daughter of the sun god, Ra, and consort/wife of the magical scribe god, Thoth. Legend says that when Ra created the world, he created his daughter to be the embodiment of integrity. She has impeccable abilities to discern true character, honesty, and motives in people.
The Goddess Ma’at was cherished by the rulers of ancient Egypt, and Pharaohs carried an effigy of Ma’at seated as a sign that he represented her regime of truth. She was the personification of the cosmic order and a representation of the stability of the universe. Ma’at was the Goddess who kept the stars in motion, the seasons changing and maintained the order of Heaven and Earth.
